The brief & The Approach

As part of a motion design course, i was tasked with creating an animated title sequence for a book of my choice. The goal was to capture the essence of the story and translate it's core ideas into an engaging visual language.

for this project, I chose "The Silent Patient". A psychological thriller about Alicia Berenson, a woman who stops speaking after killing her husband. The story follows a psychotherapist trying to uncover the truth behind her silence, only to later reveal that he was involved all along.

The concept

A title sequence built around voyeuristic framing, placing the viewer as a silent observer within Alicia's world. As the sequence unfolds, this gaze becomes more intrusive, subtly suggesting that the observer is part of the story itself, much like the psychotherapist.

Visual References

After researching about the book, i gathered a set of key spaces in which the story took place in, along with objects that hold strong narrative significance throughout it. In terms of visual language, I aimed to create a tense atmosphere through a limited color palette and a cold, detaches tone.

  • The color palette and the slow movement help convey the tense atmosphere very well.

  • Keep in mind that the transitions between frames should feel well connected, in a way that allows the sequence to tell a continuous story.

  • Think about how the final frame can function not only as the closing shot, but also as the as a poster-like image, since it carries the title of the book.
